The chimney in your home is not something you probably ever really think about, but a lot of household fires start due to too much creosote buildup. Creosote is what is left behind after a fire. You can inspect it yourself by scraping the inside of your chimney to see what type of debris is inside and how thick it appears. Do so with gloves, a mask, and goggles. If the creosote is thick, you need to have your chimney cleaned, and you need to stop using the fireplace until you have it cleaned. Use chimney logs that help remove creosote in your fireplace at least once per month to help clean your chimney.
