Does Your Chimney Need Cleaning? Why You Should Have This Done

Construction & Contractors Blog

The chimney in your home is not something you probably ever really think about, but a lot of household fires start due to too much creosote buildup. Creosote is what is left behind after a fire. It can get hot and burn in the chimney, which can catch fire and burn the surrounding area. If you've never had your chimney cleaned before, you should consider it. Read on for a few reasons why you should have your chimney cleaned.

For A Cleaner Burn

When you have a fire in your fireplace, if you have a lot of smoke, it may be because you have too much creosote buildup in your fireplace. Be sure you are removing much of the ash left over after a previous fire before you start a new fire. Remove the old ash using your fireplace tools, and place the ash into a metal can in case the ash is still hot. Remove the ash from your home. The smoke should go up and out your chimney, so if you have a lot of smoke in your home, it may be because the chimney is too full of creosote.

To Prevent A Fire

The main reason to have your chimney cleaned is to remove the buildup in the chimney and prevent a fire. A fire can occur up in the chimney and start a fire in your attic, or in an upper bedroom/closet depending on how your home is designed. If a fire starts up in the attic, you may not detect the fire until it's too late. A fire in your chimney and in your home can cause quite a bit of damage to your house, possibly reducing your entire house to nothing but embers.

What Can You Do?

If you have never had your chimney cleaned before, it's most likely time to have it cleaned. You can inspect it yourself by scraping the inside of your chimney to see what type of debris is inside and how thick it appears. Do so with gloves, a mask, and goggles. If the creosote is thick, you need to have your chimney cleaned, and you need to stop using the fireplace until you have it cleaned. Use chimney logs that help remove creosote in your fireplace at least once per month to help clean your chimney.

A Great Build

A lot of contracting work takes time — sometimes weeks, sometimes months, and sometimes years. As such, when contractors finally get finished with a project, they often like to step back and take a good look at what they've created. This is their time to be proud, and they certainly deserve to be. When we step back and take a similar look at the work of contractors, we feel awe. We may not have built the thing, but we understand the work that went into it. After you read some articles on this website, you'll have a good understanding of the work, too.
